Found throughout Southern Africa in arid and temperate regions, in vleis, open bush and woodland. It is a swift animal that zigzags as it runs, often stopping a short way off to look back. The ears are large and distinctive. Diurnal and nocturnal, it is fond of lying up in tall grass or under low bushes. It is found in pairs during the breeding season; otherwise it is found singly.
