Malaria-Free Zones and Health Precautions

In South Africa, all hunting areas managed by Eastcape & Karoo Safaris are free from malaria, eliminating the need for travelers to undergo inoculations. While no specific vaccinations are mandatory for Southern Africa visits, we strongly recommend that clients ensure their tetanus shots are current.

General Health Recommendations

Prior to embarking on your safari, it is advisable to consult with your doctor, especially if you have any existing health conditions. Bring along an ample supply of prescription medications, and consider packing a general antibiotic and basic medications for common issues like headaches, colds, flu, and stomach ailments. Our hunting vehicles and camps are equipped with comprehensive first aid kits for minor injuries.

Tick Awareness

After abundant seasonal rains in the East Cape, Pepper Ticks may be encountered. Although these ticks do not carry Lyme disease, they can transmit Tick Bite Fever. This condition can be treated with a general antibiotic, with symptoms resembling those of a regular flu or cold. Use a tick repellent with DEET and long-acting insect repellent for clothing, especially after exposure to ticks.

Eye and Sun Protection

Ensure you have an extra pair of glasses or an adequate supply of contact lenses. Dark glasses are recommended for early mornings and late afternoons to protect your eyes from the intense sun. Additionally, they serve as eye protection during open vehicle travels. Use a high SPF sunblock (at least SPF 30) to guard against the strong African sun.
