The Winterberg is an extensive east–west mountain range lying immediately north of the small towns of Bedford, Adelaide and Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Elevation on average is about 1800 metres above sea-level. The Winterberg is part of the Great Escarpment in southern Africa and ‘sister’ to the Sneeuberg and Stormberg ranges in the Eastern Cape.
The vegetation in the winterberg ranges from open savannah/grass covered mountain ranges to riverine thickets. The Tarka River is a river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Along with the Baviaans River, Grootbrak River and Kat River it is a major eastern tributary of the Great Fish River.
The grass covered mountains are home to the vaal rhebuck and mountain reedbuck. It is often said that when one spots a vaal rhebuck, they have already been watching you for three hours. The open terrain and watchful vaal rhebuck make for a very challenging hunt. These large grass covered mountains also provide the ideal vegetation for eland and mountain reedbuck.
The river thickets and thorny vegetation are home to large numbers of plains game which include kudu, waterbuck, sable, impala and many others. The open plains provide the ideal environment for animals like blesbuck, blue and black wildebeest and the red hartebeest.
Our cozy lodge/camp is nestled in an amphitheatre of mountains. The thatched lodge has 8 on-suite bedrooms. The indoor boma creates the perfect setting for sitting around the camp fire while discussing the days hunting experiences. Traditional African meals together with various venison dishes are served daily, and provide the essence of a true African safari!
